Abstract

In a process of deoxidizing molten copper and copper alloys, a reducing atmosphere containing at least 5 per cent of a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen is maintained above and in direct contact with the molten metal in a furnace, and a neutral gas or vapour such as steam introduced into the molten metal to effect intensive stirring. Pulverized coal and gas or oil may be burnt above the metal to maintain the reducing atmosphere, which may contain 9-10 per cent. of the gas mixture.
