Abstract

In a method of refining steel in which the steel bath is heated with carbon and a non-oxidising gas, carbon is first added to the bath and non-oxidising and non-carburizing gas is blown into the bath after the addition of carbon. The carbon may be added as a solid, as a hydrocarbon gas, as a compound, e.g., calcium carbide, or as an alloy, e.g., carburized steel of which manganese, silicon and aluminium contents must be less than .4 per cent, .1 per cent and .1 per cent respectively. The scavenging gas which may be heated may contain less than 35 per cent CO and not more than 30 per cent N and may be a treated blast furnace, coke oven or lighting gas from which oxidizing and sulphur compounds have p been removed. The steel may then be deoxidized and/or denitrogenized by manganese, silicon or aluminium. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the replacement of the carbon by an acid slag, such as a blast furnace slag, suitably treated, in a powdered or granular condition which is blown in with the scavenging gas. Titanium and vanadium may also be used as deoxidants or denitridants. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted
