Abstract
In a process for desulphurizing iron, the iron in the solid state is heated to 750-850 DEG C. in the presence of solid carbonaceous material in admixture with one or more compounds of metals having great tendency to combine with sulphur, such as oxides, carbonates, hydroxides, or carbides of calcium, magnesium, or barium. In addition to solid carbonaceous material, other carbon-containing substances in solid liquid or gaseous form, such as wood, oil, or carbon monoxide, may be used. A suitable gas of low molecular weight, such as hydrogen or carbon monoxide, may be supplied during the process in order to enhance the diffusion velocity of the sulphur, and the sulphur-binding material is added in greater quantity than is equivalent to the quantity of sulphur to be removed. The process is carried out in an electrically-heated rotary furnace and the iron used may be produced by the reduction, without fusion, of ore and carbon in a rotary furnace. Specification 379,331 is referred to.
