Dry processes of extracting chromium.- Chromium is obtained by smelting in a blast furnace a mixture containing chromic oxide or ore, an oxygen-containing sodium compound such as sodium carbonate, and carbon. Sodium is liberated and volatilized, and reacts with the chromic oxide with the production of chromium and the reformation of sodium oxide. An oxygen compound of sodium, preferably sodium chromate, may be introduced through the tuyeres for the purpose of decomposing any chromium carbide formed. Loss of sodium may. if desired, also be made up by additions of sodium compounds through the tuyeres.
