Abstract

327,956. Johnson, J. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustric Akt.-Ges.). Dec. 14, 1928. Metal carbonyls are produced by the interaction of reducible metal compounds such as sulphides, carbonates and oxides with carbon monoxide at high temperatures and pressures. Temperatures between 200‹ C. and 450‹ C. and pressures between 20 and 1200 atmospheres may be used. Substances such as copper, lime, or caustic alkalies may be added to facilitate the reduction of the metal compound. The decomposition of the carbon monoxide may be suppressed by adding to the gas sulphur compounds such as carbon disulphide, or by mixing sulphides such as alkali or alkaline-earth sulphides with the metal compound. Carbonyl-forming metals may be separated from each other and from metals not capable of forming carbonyls. Examples describe the production of carbonyls from nickel oxide, sulphide, carbonate and chloride and from iron oxide and ferrous chloride. Specification 256,428 is referred to.
