Abstract
301,565. Carpmael, A., (I. G. Farbeninindustrie Akt.-Ges.). Sept. 6, 1927. Alkali metal cyanides are prepared by the action of ammonia and carbon monoxide at temperatures of 400-800‹ C. upon alkali metal hydroxides, oxides or salts such as sodium carbonate, sulphide, formate, acetate or sulphate, potassium sulphate, &c. Water vapour formed by the reaction may be removed from the gas mixture prior to being passed again into the reaction chamber. Diluents or indifferent fillers such as magnesium oxide may be added to prevent caking of the mass, and catalysts such as iron cyanides or other compounds may be added. The reaction may be carried out under pressure and diluent gases such as nitrogen or hydrogen may be added. In an example, a mixture of ammonia and carbon monoxide is passed through an agitated melt of sodium cyanide and sodium carbonate at about 600‹ C.
