[Class 39(iii)] [Also in Group II] In the recovery of zinc from zinc-bearing metalliferous materials (see Group II) an electric furnace is used comprising a substantially vapour-tight chamber, such as 10 in Fig. 2, adapted to hold a body of liquid slag, means 13 for feeding zinciferous materials and means for withdrawing liquid slag electrodes 20 projecting downwardly into contact with the body of liquid slag, means 16 for distributing granular carbonaceous reducing agent over substantially the entire surface of the slag, a vapour outlet from the upper part of the said chamber and means for condensing the zinc vapour substantially entirely by direct contact with liquid zinc. The electrodes may be mounted as indicated in Fig. 7 in which an electrode 20 is shown surrounded by a vertical cylindrical wall 25 projecting upwards from the chamber, and having a cylindrical skirt member 22 depending into the interior of the said wall member'and means 24 provides a slidable seal between the two cylindrical members. The electrode has an annular cooling chamber 30 at the point where it is first exposed to air.
