[Also in Group XII] In a method for the reduction of oxidic ores and oxide-containing metals, slag is contained in intercommunicating basins, in at least one of which it receives heat from a flame, and in at least one other of which it gives up heat to a charge of powdery or small pieces forming a layer of material to be treated floating on the slag and protected from contact with the flame, so as to reduce the oxides under the action of coal or other reducing substance. As shown in Fig. 1, material is supplied from a distributer 7 into basin 3 and a burner 6 with air channels 5 is disposed in chamber 2, while molten metal is tapped off at 9. Alternatively, as shown in Fig. 3, masonry partitions 10 may divide the furnace into zones 11, 12 and 13 in the first of which a flame is provided to heat the slag while to the others a charge 14 is supplied. Inert gases may be supplied to the furnace.
