Abstract
1,271,688. Shaft furnaces. PENZENSKY KOMPRESSORNY ZAVOD. 24 April, 1969, No. 21027/69. Heading F4B. [Also in Division C7] A method of operating a furnace having a shaft within which is a shoulder supporting charge materials, e.g. a metal and/or metal oxide, comprises feeding a first stream of hydrocarbons into the shaft together with an oxidizing gas through tuyeres 12, the first stream of hydrocarbons being partially burnt with the oxidizing gas to produce a reducing atmosphere; feeding a second stream of hydrocarbons into the shaft through tuyeres 15 above the first stream of hydrocarbons and oxidizing gas, the second stream being partially decomposed by contact with the refractory lining of the shaft thereby cooling the lining wherein the combustion and decomposition products of the hydrocarbons pass upwards through the charge to melt the metal therein and/or reduce the metal oxide to molten metal.
