Abstract

<PICT:0496937/III/1> An electric furnace comprises a chamber 1 containing a molten bath 3, a spout 2 communicating with the lower part of the chamber and receiving a cathode electrode 6, a conduit 8 for charging material on to the bath, a taphole 12 arranged above the bath, a gas outlet 10, and an anode electrode 4 passing through a stuffing box 13 in the top of the chamber. A second spout 11 forming a gas inlet may be provided. When making carbides, lime and carbon is fed on to the bath in a thin layer. When making cyanamides a thin layer of carbide is fed on to the bath and nitrogen or air is fed through the spout 11. In making calcium nitrate lime is fed to the bath instead of carbide.
