[Class 78 (i)] [Also in Group XII] In a hopper for feeding coal by gravity to ovens, furnaces, or the like, " bridging " is prevented or broken down by introducing jets of a gaseous fluid, such as compressed air or steam, into the coal at a number of points spaced around the lower part of the hopper. In the form shown, the fluid is supplied to jets 6 by three external ring pipes 5 arranged at different levels and fed from a common supply pipe 8. Internal pipes and jets may be employed if desired.
