Abstract
1,100,310. Electric reduction furnace. NIPPON CARBIDE KOGYO KABUSHIKI KAISHA. 12 Jan., 1966 [20 Jan., 1965], No. 1514/66. Heading H5H. [Also in Division F4] An electric reducing furnace in which gas is evolved comprises C electrodes 1 positioned at the vertices of an equilateral triangle, surrounded by a water cooled wall 3 extending along a line defined by equipotential arcs around the electrodes and lines connecting the arcs, the wall being sufficiently spaced from the electrodes to encompass the gas evolving zones at the bottom of each electrode; a furnace shell having a wall 10 and a C bottom section containing a tapping hole 11; a cover 4 closing the area within the wall 3; electrode charging means 5, 5<SP>1</SP> arranged in the centre of the cover and symmetrically about the centre and gas inducting means 6 in the wall 3 or cover for the evolved gas. Each electrode mounted in a holder 7 with insulators 7<SP>1</SP> extends into charge material 13 and is surrounded by a seal cylinder 2 supported by fittings 12. Additional charging pipes (5<SP>11</SP>), Fig. 1, (not shown), are placed between the walls 3 and 10. In other embodiments additional induction pipes are placed near each electrode and the rate at which the electrodes are consumed is controlled by varying the flow of gas about each electrode. The charging and induction pipes are concentric thereby preheating the material 13, and parts of the seal cylinders 2 and wall 3 may coincide. The furnace may be used to produce Ca, Si and B carbides, ferromanganese and ferrosilicon alloys and to collect evolved CO.
