Abstract
1,223,162. Arc furnace electrodes. J. E. OSTBERG. 11 June, 1968, No. 27616/68. Heading H5H. A rod like electrode for an electric arc furnace comprises the following coaxial components; an upper metallic member 1 by which the electrode is secured to electrode holder 2; an intermediate metallic structure 3 having a ceramic coating 4; a metallic member 5 and carbonaceous electrode tip 7 secured to member 5. As shown, the intermediate metallic structure comprises a plurality of helical cooling tubes 3, although such tubes may be straight. Upper metal member 1 has a pair of semi-annular chambers 1a, 1b whereas lower metal member 5 has a single chamber 5a. Coolant flows through tube 1c into chamber la, via some of the tubes 3 to chamber 5a, and thence through the remainder of tubes 3 to chamber 1b and an outlet pipe not shown. The tip 7 is screwed into the lower member 5 and may be consumable or non-consumable. The coating of ceramic 4 protects the joint between the member 5 and the tip 7. A central passageway 8 communicating with a coaxial passage 9 in tip 7 or a radial passage 10 in ceramic 4 is provided for supplying protective or reactive gases, or materials for the furnace reaction. The tip 7 is made of graphite, the tubes 3 preferably of copper, and the ceramic covering 4 of high alumina material, spinels or sillmanite. Some tubes 3 may carry more current than others.
