Abstract
554,182. Charging shaft furnaces. ST. JOSEPH LEAD CO. June 18, 1942, No. 8381. Convention date, Feb. 20. [Class 51 (ii)] In an electric shaft furnace for smelting ores, the charge of ore and fuel is fed into the shaft so that the larger particles of ore and fuel occupy an annular zone within the shaft spaced from the wall thereof. The charge is preheated in a drum 8 and fed through a passage 10 into a rotary rectangular hopper 11 provided with a hinged baffle plate 23 to direct the charge alternately to one side or the other of the hopper so that it is fed through either the outlet 25 towards the centre of the furnace or through the outlet 24 to the periphery. The coarse particles of the charge segregate in an annular zone c the shape of which may be varied by the periods for which the ore is fed through the outlets 24, 25. The hopper is provided with sealing means at 19, 20.
