[Class 39 (iii)] Surrounding the electrode 1 and the electrode holder 2 of a smelting furnace is an annular charging shaft composed of an outer wall 5 and a relatively longer inner wall 4, the inner wall 4 forming between it and the electrode a gas chamber 3 The annular charging shaft is divided into a number of separate charging shafts by radial walls arranged to allow gas to escape through openings 7 formed in the inner wall 4. Hinged to the lower edges of the outer wall 5 are' lids 6 for either enclosing the furnace or exposing the charge to stirring treatment. A modification is described and illustrated for furnaces having more than one electrode. Specification 613,949 is referred to.
