Abstract

662,403. Electrolytic production of aluminium. ELEKTROKEMISK A/S. Oct. 24, 1949 [Oct. 30, 1948], No. 27258/49. Class 41. [Also in Group XI] For the electrolytic production, for example, of aluminium, an electric furnace of the type having one or more vertical electrodes comprises an anode 1 which is surrounded and sealed by material constituting the charge. The gas developed in the furnace is prevented from escaping along the surface of the electrode by the charge crust of Al 2 O 3' and prevents the oxidation of the lower part of the electrode. The gas is exhausted and collected via an opening 3 in the crust through which a close-fitting pipe 5 is introduced. The pipe 5 has an opening 6 for cleaning purposes and a burner at the end of a pipe 7 enables the CO and tar fumes in the gas to be burnt in air, the residual gases then being suitable for cleaning. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also modifications in which the gas is collected in an extension of the permanent casing surrounding the electrode. The sealing material is retained in place by means of a ring which may be divided into sections and is of a form corresponding to the plan shape of the electrode. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
