Abstract

298,922. Jackson, L. Mellersh-, (New Jersey Zinc Co.). July 8, 1927, Resistance furnaces.-A vertical retort 10, contained within an electric furnace 11 of the kind described in Specification 298,921, is made of metal, preferably certain specified nickelchromium-iron alloys, and is supported solely by girders 25. The upper part of the retort is surrounded by a layer 38 of hardened carbon paste and by coal dust 43, and the lower end of the retort slides in an extension 18 bolted to the bottom of the furnace which is sealed by a graphite ring 15<1>. The charge is supplied intermittently to a hopper 32 closed by a plug 34. The cover 37 is then replaced and covered with coal dust and the plug is lowered to charge the retort. Pyrometers 16 are provided.
