Class 39(3) [Also in Group II] An electric furnace for the smelting of ores comprises a refractory-lined vessel 1 having a gas-tight closure 3 and a cylinder 4 for the charging of ore to the furnace. Fine-grained coal is charged through opening 7 to form a bed which is heated by passage of current between vertical electrodes 6 which are mounted with a sliding fit in sleeves 8 of non-conductive material such as quartz. The sleeves 8 may be cooled by water circulation. Ore is charged to the bed from hopper 13 by a rotary distributing plate 14 so as to ensure uniform distribution of the ore over the surface of the coal bed. The ore sinks through the coal bed, is heated and then reduced, the gaseous products of reduction serving to fluidize the coal bed which action may be assisted by injection of gases into the bed through openings 20. Gaseous reduction products are removed from the furnace via off-take 10. Reduced metal and slag are removed via orifice 16 at the base of the furnace.
