Abstract
1474768 Smelting ferrous material KLOCKNER-WERKE AG 13 May 1974 [26 May 1973 25 Aug 1973(2)] 21020/74 Heading C7D A charge of sponge iron, scrap, pellets or sinter is smelted in a furnace 1 by means of burners or electrodes positioned at the periphery of the hearth. A plurality of burners 3 fed with oil/02 or oil/O 2 -air mixtures act upon the charge and form a structure supported at the centre which supports the charge column. Air is fed in at 8 to burn waste gases and pre-heat the charge, and reducing gas, e.g. CH4, is introduced through annular orifice 9. The molten metal 6 is heated by the flames 4 before discharging over raised portion 12 through aperture 7. The molten metal may also be superheated by an induction coil in the base of the vessel, or by injecting fine coal into the melt.
