Abstract
695,158. Reducing iron ores. SOC. FORNI LUBATTI. June 1, 1951 [June 5, 1950]. No. 13049/51. Class 72 A process of obtaining steel directly from iron ore comprises forming a bath of slag and maintaining it at a high temperature, charging on to the slag an intimate mixture of iron ore, reducing agents and slag formers from which is collected a raw molten steel for charging to a refining furnace, and discharging slag to maintain a constant thickness of slag layer. As shown, a liquid slag may be formed in a reducing furnace 4 and a charge of intimately mixed, finely divided iron ore, lime, and coke fed on to the surface of the slag from a mixer 1. An electric current is passed through the slag from electrodes 5 to maintain it at a temperature at which the iron ore in the charge will be reduced, the iron falling through the slag layer and collecting at the bottom, from whence it may be fed continuously or intermittently to a refining furnace 12 which may be an electric furnace or an open-hearth furnace. The thickness of the slag layer may be kept constant by drawing off slag at 8.
