Abstract
Steel is produced in an installation comprising an unlined hot-blast cupola furnace for the production of molten pig-iron and an electric arc furnace to which the iron is charged together with steel and/or iron scrap and ore, the latter furnace having a transformer of capacity 20 to 50% higher than is required for normal arc furnace operation whereby the refining process is accelerated by the application of a strong current surge to raise the temperature of the bath in the region of the electrodes rapidly to about 2000 DEG C. The carbon content of the cupola iron is regulated by adjustment of the quantity of gas removed from the furnace below the level of the tuyeres. Specification 755,045 is referred to.
