867,973. Refining iron. DEUTSCHE EDELSTAHLWERKE A. G. May 5, 1958, No. 14294/58. Class 72 [Also in Groups XX and XL(b)] The composition of a bath of metal in a furnace is determined or controlled by striking an arc or spark between the bath and an electrode, dispersing the light therefrom, and analysing the spectrum qualitatively or quantitatively. As shown the arc may be struck between the carbon electrodes 3 of an electric arc furnace and the bath 4, or an auxilliary electrode, such as one surrounded by a tubular gas filled refractory probe (Fig. 3, not shown), may be used. The composition of the bath may be automatically controlled by the operation of gates 19 of additive hoppers 20 in response to the e.m.f.s. generated by the photo electric cells 13 the output of which is fed to an amplifier 14 and thence to electrically operable mechanism 23 for opening or closing the gates.
