526,696. Electrode furnaces. NORSKE AKTIESELSKAB FOR ELEKTROKEMISK INDUSTRI. March 23, 1939, Nos. 9144, 9145, 9146 and 9147. Convention dates, June 30, 1938, Oct. 17, 1938, Oct. 17, 1938, and Oct. 17, 1938. [Class 39 (iii)] In an electric furnace employing continuous electrodes vertical contacts, 1, 1', 2, 2', 3, 3<SP>1</SP> extend into the electrode material to different depths, and one or more extend into the baked part of the electrode. The electrode material moves downwardly within a casing, and consists of a fully-baked part below line 4, and a completely unbaked part above the line 5. The lowest contacts 3, 3' supply current to and support the electrode, and when the contacts 2, 2<SP>1</SP> penetrate into the baked part they fulfil these purposes and the contacts 3, 3<SP>1</SP> are withdrawn. The contacts may be tubular instead of solid rods, and the furnace may be changed therethrough, or through the conduits formed in the electrode material by the passage of the contacts ; the tubes may also be used to remove gases.
