Abstract
741,606. Glass manufacture. GELL, P. A. M. Feb. 22, 1954 [Nov. 20, 1952], No- 29287/52. Class 56 [Also in Group XI] Glass is heated by the passage therethrough of an electric current, and bubbles which are formed at the electrodes are prevented from migrating, to the working body of . the glass, by perforate barriers which do not hinder the passage of the current. The glass is withdrawn for use from the body of glass between the barriers. As shown, a barrier 16 is placed near each electrode 14, leaving spaces 17 in which the heated glass rises to discharge bubbles at the surface. The barriers may be of electrically non-conducting material, or of a conducting material, preferably molybdenum, in which case they are insulated from the electrodes, e.g., by securing them to molybdenum rods 25 embedded in the floor 11. The barrier elements may be coated with a material which has relatively high dielectric properties at the temperature involved. The barriers may be of 16 S.W.G. mesh of from one-sixteenth to one quarter of an inch openings. The batch mixture, including substances which volatilize at furnace temperatures, is charged on to the upper surface of the melt at the central region thereof, the gases liberated at the surface tending to become unified with the gas in the bubbles which are thus burst or liberated. In a modification, a glass discharge opening in the floor, midway between the electrodes, is surrounded by a perforate fence upstanding from the floor.
