Abstract
782,128. Electric furnaces. JENAER GLASWERK SCHOTT & GEN. Dec. 17, 1954 [Dec. 17, 1953], No. 36650/54. Class 39(3) In a furnace for making or heating glass by passing current therethrough between immersed electrodes 2. at least one electrode is separated from contact with the molten glass A by a diaphragm 3 spaced from the electrode and preventing passage of the glass. The diaphragms 3 are plates or annular and are conductors or semi-conductors or become conductive when hot e.g. stabilized zirconium, one or more metal oxides, or compounds of silicic acid with metal oxides. The space 4 between the diaphragm and the electrode is filled with a material of different composition from the melt, and, especially when the electrodes are of carbon, this material has a low oxygen ion content, e.g. a glass with a high content of boron oxide.
