Abstract
898,691. Drawing sheet glass. G.B.D. SOC. ANON. HOLDING. April 11, 1960 [April 13, 1959], No. 12823/60. Class 56. In the drawing of sheet glass from a melt 1 in a drawing chamber 2, as by drawing over a roller 5, screens 6, 7 are provided closely overlying the melt 1 on both sides of the drawn glass 4, the screens 6, 7 having a flat, horizontal, continuous, heat-reflecting undersurface equispaced throughout its area from the level of the melt surfaces 3<SP>1</SP>, 3<SP>11</SP> in heat-exchanging relationship, the screens 6, 7 being specifically heated so as to be maintained at a temperature close to that of the melt surfaces 3<SP>1</SP>, 3<SP>11</SP> and at least at their under surface of a material adapted to reflect a major proportion of incident radiation in the wavelength range of about 3 to 5 microns. which encompasses most of the thermal radiation of molten glass. Refractory metal oxides or noble metals are used for the screens. As shown, the screens 6, 7 of refractory material have a covering of platinum foil 6<SP>1</SP>, 7<SP>1</SP> which are connected to conductor plates through which an electric current is passed to heat the screens 6, 7. Specification 875,553 is referred to.
