Abstract

728,065. Electrically heated crucibles. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. July 23, 1953 [April 29, 1952], No. 10780/52. Class 39 (3). A crucible or container for molten material is of ceramic material that is conductive when hot and an electric current is passed through it to maintain or increase its temperature after an initial heating. The crucible is formed with two or more integral side pockets 11 each containing glass or other material 13 which is conductive and molten at temperatures less than the working temperature. A carbon or other refractory electrode 15 extends into the material in the pocket for passing current through the crucible. The electrodes may be porous and impregnated with glass from the side pockets. The initial heating of the crucible may be effected by electric heating elements or by pouring molten material in the container. According to the Provisional Specification, the bottom of the crucible is formed with apertures which may be fitted with platinum for the egress of glass to be drawn into fibres or filaments. The electrodes may pass through the bottom of the side pockets and current may be passed through them from end to end to heat the crucible to render it conductive.
