Abstract
678,134. Electric resistance furnaces for graphitization of carbon. UNION CARBIDE & CARBON CORPORATION. March 14, 1951 [March 28, 1950], No. 6134/51. Class 39(iii) Shaped carbon articles 11 e.g. furnace electrodes, graphite bars for electrolytic cells, carbon plates for motor generator brushes, or rods for mercury are rectifiers, are packed in granular carbonaceous material 13 having a negative thermal coefficient of electric resistance, in which are embedded auxiliary electric resistance elements 14 having a positive thermal coefficient of electric resistance and a lower resistance than that of the granular material at below 400‹C. Several electrodes 15 supply current to the granular material 13 and auxiliary resistances 14, which may be coarse wire netting, whereby the articles 11 and granular material are heated uniformly in the temperature range wherein the resistance of the auxiliary elements 14 is lower than that of the granular material, and heating is continued until the resistance of the auxiliary elements is higher than that of the granular material 13. The pieces of wire netting 14 are arranged above, below and in parallel lines between and outside the articles so as to substantially surround them. The ends of the wire netting 14, are connected to graphite bars 16 adjacent the electrodes 15. Thus the netting heats the granular material up to 600‹C, and heating is continued by current through the granular material up to 1000‹-1500‹C or above graphitization temperature e.g. 2700‹C.
