Abstract
Articles, e.g. electrolytic anodes, electrodes, heat-exchanger elements, seal rings, electrical brushes and contacts, bearings or refractory parts for ovens are moulded from, e.g., 20 to 30 per cent of bituminous coal and 70 to 80 per cent of graphite. The graphite may be natural, electric furnace graphite, decomposed silicon carbide or calcined petroleum coke. The coal may be replaced by pulverized or pulped wood, sugar, pitch, raw petroleum coke or fuel oil. It is also stated that any of these materials may be used with each other or raw petroleum coke may be used on its own. Particles of mica, copper or <PICT:0794989/III/1> tungsten may also be added. The material is placed in a chamber 19 in an oven heated by electrodes 22, 23, the material acting as the resistance element. Pressure is applied during heating by plungers 38, 39 which also prevent the escape of gases. The articles may be subjected to graphitization during or after moulding. A hollow article may be made by placing a piece of hardwood in the mould which disintegrates on heating. The Specification includes many examples of the process.
