Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain ZrC at a low cost without requiring complex equipment and difficult operation by blending ZrSiO4-base raw material with a carbon material; heating the blended raw material to a temp, enough for formation of ZrC and SiC; and separating ZrC formed.
CONSTITUTION: ZrSiO4-base raw material is blended with a carbon material such as coke or anthracite in an amt. of 6W8 mols as CW1mol of ZrSiO4. Blended raw material 4 is then charged into Acheson furnace 1, where it is heated to about 1600°C under a reducing atmosphere by supplying an electric current to electric resistance heating element A from guide electrodes 5, thereby inducing the following reaction; ZrSiO4+6C→ZrC+SiC+4CO. The resulting ZrC has high hardness and high heat resistance, so it is used as a cutting tool material, heat resistant special ceramics, etc.
