Abstract

Uranium carbides are formed by producing a solid body of a mixture of carbon and a uranium oxide, and reacting the oxide with the carbon in the heat of an electric arc, by using the solid body as a consumable electrode in an arc furnace. The weights of uranium oxide and carbon in the solid body are substantially stoichiometric and the body is produced by mixing the uranium oxide and carbon with a carbonizable binder, e.g. pitch, or a phenolic resin, shaping and heating to 1600 DEG F. During use the electrode fuses, the uranium oxide and carbon react to give a uranium carbide, e.g. UC, UC2, or U2C3, which is deposited on a collector electrode, e.g. a water-cooled copper crucible, the gases produced being pumped away. The current density of the arc is 400 amps. per sq. inch initially, and increases to 700 amps. per sq. inch as the process proceeds.
