Abstract
PURPOSE: To produce calcium carbide using combustion gas of heavy oil, coal, etc. in place of electric power by heating blended raw material charged from the top of a furnace with hot gas rising from the lower combustion chamber; heat exchanging part of the hot gas for air outside the furnace; and using the resulting hot air as air for combustion.
CONSTITUTION: Calcareous raw material and carbon material such as coke are mixed in the molar ratio of C/CaO=1W6. The blended raw material is charged from the top of a vertical type furnace and heated to around 700°C with hot gas formed by burning heavy oil, coal, etc. with air heated to 800W1600°C in the lower combustion chamber of the furnace. The heated raw material is then rapidly heated to 1600W2000°C, the most part of Ca formed is recovered, and calcium carbide is partially formed. Thereafter, the raw material heated to around 2000°C is converted into calcium carbide at the lower part of the furnace and taken out from the bottom. On the other hand, part of the hot gas in the combustion chamber is taken out from the furnace, and air preheated to 800W1600°C is introduced into the chamber as air for combustion.
