Abstract
PURPOSE: To economically manufacture calcium carbide using liquid or gaseous fuel in place of expensive electric energy by preheating combustion air with hot exhaust gas from a process for heating raw material with combustion gas and by burning fuel with the preheated air to attain a high temp.
CONSTITUTION: Lime raw material and carbon material such as coke are mixed so that the molar ratio of C/CaO becomes 1W4, and mixed powder raw material 1 is charged into carbide formation furnace 2. Fuel 4 is supplied 7 to burner 6 in furnace 2. On the other hand, combustion air is supplied to heat exchanger 9, where it is heat-exchanged for exhaust gas of above 1500°C from furnace 2 and supplied 5 to burner 6 as air preheated to above 1000°C. In furnace 2 calcium carbide is formed at such a high temp. as above 2000°C. Exhaust gas of above 1500°C from furnace 2 is introduced 8 into exchanger 9 and used to preheat air to above 1000°C.
