Abstract

Material low in manganese content and high in phosphorus and iron is calcined to form a substantially constant composition charge and is fed into a covered electric furnace on to the surface of a molten slag bath maintained therein, where it is subjected to the action of a relatively low-phosphorus content ferromanganese or ferromanganese-silicon alloy and added basic or acidic fluxing agent sufficient to produce a molten slag having a base (including manganous oxide) to acid ratio in the range of 0.8-1.5 to 1.0 on a molecular basis. The reaction takes place at a temperature in the range 1300-1500 DEG C. to produce a molten metallic iron product containing phosphorus and other impurities present in the original charge and a low-phosphorus, manganese-enriched slag, the latter being passed to a second covered electric furnace on to the surface of a molten slag and subjected to the action of a reducing agent and added fluxing material at a temperature in the range 1300-1500 DEG C. to produce a ferromanganese alloy. Iron may be added to the charge in the first furnace to provide sufficient metal product to function as a collector for the phosphorus. The metal and slag may be passed to a holding furnace to effect a more complete separation. In the operation of both furnaces the control of temperature is effected by maintaining the arcing tips of the electrodes within the range from 1/2 inch above the upper slag surface to 3 inches below it, by controlling the depth of slag in the furnace and by feeding the charge at such a rate and in such a way as to avoid submergence of the arcing tips in the raw charge material. The reducing agent in the second furnace may be carbonaceous or non-carbonaceous depending on the carbon content required in the product. A ferromanganese-silicon may be produced in this furnace which may be returned to the furnace for use as the reducing agent or used with manganese-containing slag from the first stage to produce a required ferromanganese product in a third operation. Specifications 762,469 and 827,161 are referred to.
