Abstract

608,475. Furnace electrodes. NORSKE AKTIESELSKAB FOR ELEKTROKEMISK INDUSTRI. Feb. 25, 1946, No. 5814. Convention date, June 13, 1941. [Class 39(iii)]. A "self-baking" electrode 1 for a furnace is supported in a permanent casing 4 below which extends a temporary electrode casing 7, e.g. of aluminium, which is consumed with the electrode, and metallic contact rods 3 are inserted below the casing 4 through the temporary casing into the raw electrode paste which is bonded on subsequent heating to the contact. The contact rods 3 have lateral projections 6 which bear on and reinforce the casing 7. The permanent casing 4 has lower extensions 14 projecting between the contacts 3 to reinforce the casing 7. These extensions are of T section or form hollow channels through which raw material, e.g. aluminium oxide, is charged into the furnace. Opposite sides of the casing 4 are connected by internal reinforcement. The contacts 3 are suspended from copper bars 8 carrying the weight of the electrode and fed with current from bars 9. When the bars 8 are raised, the weight of the electrode is taken by suspension means supported from holes 13 in projections on the casing 4. Covers 11, 12 of the furnace are pivoted on tubes 10. The furnace is closed, and gas is exhausted at the two ends. Specifications 478,556 and 481,010 are referred to.
