Abstract

The furnace (2) is enclosed by a lower part (6) and an upper part (7), both parts (6, 7) either being linked by a swivelling appliance (8) or being displaceable with respect to one another. Thus it is possible, after swinging open or displacing the parts, to carry out work on the furnace (2). When the furnace (2) is enclosed by the parts (6, 7), the hot gases are discharged upwards, above the normal operating level, by a natural chimney effect. At the same time this results in a cooling effect, owing to which the thermal equilibrium of the anode and cathode remains undisturbed in spite of the enclosure.
