Abstract

119,018. Kilburn, B. E. D., (Norse Aktieselskab for Elektrokemisk Industri Norsk Industri-Hypotekbank). Jan. 9, 1918. Electrode furnaces.- Electrodes are made by pressing carbonaceous paste around metal cores and baking by passage of electric current first through the cores and then through the carbonaceous material as this becomes conductive. A number of electrodes B, say twenty, may be connected in pairs alternately at opposite ends by carbon supporting blocks D-D<3>, the extreme blocks being connected to a transformer E and regulator F; or parallel or series-parallel connexions may be employed. The electrodes may be packed in fine sand or charcoal in a casing consisting of three fire-brick walls and a fourth wall of removable iron plates. After switching off the current, the electrodes may be allowed to cool in the furnace.
