Abstract
116,853. Kilburn, B. E. D., (Norske Aktieselskab for Elektrokomisk Industri Norsk Industri-Hypotekbank). Jan. 9, 1918. Carbon.-An electrode for an electric furnace is made in a continuous length by feeding a carbonaceous mixture into a hopper or mould B leading into the furnace in which the electrode is used, current passing through the raw material to bake it. The carbonaceous material, such as a mixture of graphite, coke, anthracite, or the like with tar and pitch, may be pressed around a metal core C having excrescences C' and capable of having fresh lengths united to it as required. Current is supplied to the upper end of the core rod. The furnace shown has a bottom electrode D and is suitable for iron smelting. In a modification, the baking is carried out by regulable current independent of and smaller than the furnace current. The secondaries of two transformers may have one terminal of each connected to a collar around the electrode and their other terminals connected respectively to the electrode cores and a hearth electrode. A higher electric pressure may be applied to the unbaked part. Fresh lengths of carbonaceous mixture are joined on at intervals.
