118,690. Hamilton, W. B., Blackwell, H. A., and Turner, W. L. Sept. 14, 1917. Furnace details.-An electrode for a metallurgical furnace comprises a casing 1 enclosing granular graphite or like material, which is compressed by a metal plug 10, Fig. 2, and conveys current to a replaceable anthracite or other carbon block 2 projecting from the working end of the electrode. A water-cooled metal casing covered with refractory material may be used, or a casing of silica, magnesite, or the like reinforced by longitudinal non- magnetic metal rods 3, which may be bound by a ring 5 at their enlarged lower ends and secured by shoulders and cotters to a fork 8 at their upper ends. Plates 7 attached to the fork clasp the ends of the lower flanges of an I-shaped girder 6. A carrier 12 through which the plug 10 screws may similarly be secured to the upper flanges of the girder. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 7004/05.
