Abstract

122,828. Armour Fertilizer Works, (Assignees of Shoeld, M.). Jan. 28, 1918, [Convention date]. Electrode furnaces.-In furnace suitable for making aluminium nitride, the solid material and gas travel continuously between an axial vertical electrode 23 and a ring electrode 26. The gas, such as nitrogen with or without a little carbon monoxide, may be supplied from pipes 34, 35 below the furnace, so as to pass in the opposite direction to the material. By the action of the cool material and the cool gas, the electric current is confined to a narrow zone. The ring electrode 26 may be constructed of graphite blocks, embedded in a less conductive carbon lining 11. This is surrounded successively by refractory bricks 12, fire-brick 13, other bricks 16, and a metal casing. The furnace chamber may be octagonal in cross-section. From diametrically opposite points of the ring electrode project graphite connecting-rods 27, 28 sealed at 32 by asbestos cement and encircled by conducting clamps 29 cooled by sprays 30. The axial electrode passes through a conducting water-cooled clamp 24 also sealed by asbestos cement. The material is charged into the flared upper end of the chamber by way of two diverging passages 19, 20, provided with gas exits 21 and poke holes 22. The material may be briquetted with a slight excess of carbon, to protect the electrodes and lining. A cooling coil 33 may be embedded in the upper part of the fire-brick. A gas-tight discharge device is provided. A priming of graphite is used at starting.
