Abstract
122,829. Armour Fertilizer Works, (Assignees of Shoeld, M.). Jan. 28, 1918, [Convention date]. Electrode furnaces.-In the manufacture of aluminium nitride. briquettes composed of comminuted carbon, alumina, and a binder are caused to descend in the form of a hollow cylinder through which current passes radially in all directions, for instance between a vertical electrode 13 and an annular electrode 14. A nitrogenous gas is introduced by pipes 12 at the lower end of the furnace, and becomes uniformly distributed through the charge. The cold material and cold gas serve to confine the current path to the middle zone of the column, where both arrive in a preheated condition.
