Abstract

Ore and oxide processes.-In the direct reduction of iron, the ore, together with a large excess of coke or other solid fuel, passes through a rotary preheating-cylinder B to a reduction chamber A of the kind described in Specification 17,323/14. The air supply through the tuyeres 7, 9 is controlled so as to produce a temperature of about 3500‹ F. in the reaction zone, and the reduced metal in globular form, together with the unburnt carbon, sinks into a cooling- chamber 13. The product is discharged by a reciprocating plate 14 having apertures 14a, 14<b> into pits 15. Bituminous fuel is charged into the furnace through an inlet 17. The reaction gases escape to a chimney through the preheating-chamber, and any combustible components are consumed by air supplied through a tuyere 12. The unburnt carbon is separated from the metal and again used in the process. Specification 17,325/14, [Class 51 (ii). Furnaces and kilns for applying &c.], is also referred to.
