Abstract

615,760. Electrode furnaces. HADDAN, R. (Corning Glass Works). July 22, 1946, No. 21836. [Class 39 (iii)] A glass-melting tank 11 with a batch receiving opening 25 near each end has at least two cooperating electrodes 26, 26<1> between the said openings and each opening between at least two other co-operating electrodes 26, 27 or 26<1>, 271, at least two of the electrodes extending across the tank. The electrodes between which the said openings are situated produce a high current density through the intervening glass whilst the electrodes between the said openings produce a low current density through the intervening glass. Midway, the metting tank 11 may be coupled by a submerged throat to the end of a rectangular tank 12. The tank 12 is divided into two conditioning sections 13 and 14 by a bridge wall 20 having a submerged throat, the bottom of which is above the bottom of the tank 12, the glass in each section 13 and 14 being heated by resistance heating elements 35 situated above the glass. Current adjusting devices are connected in the supply lines to the electrodes 26, 261, 27 and 27<1> and the resistance heating elements 35.
