Abstract

652,776. Electrode furnaces. LUBATTI, E. Aug. 4, 1948, No. 20582. Convention date, Aug. 25, 1947. [Class 39((iii)] A glass &c. furnace 1 is heated by one or more electrodes each of which comprises a head 4, Fig. 4, carried by an arm 5, thermally insulated as at 6 and having an associated electric cable 7 and cooling- fluid connections 8, 9, some or all of said electrodes being movable so that their location and depth of immersion may be varied. Fig. 1 shows a furnace fitted with two sets of three electrodes 3, each set being mounted on a movable structure 10 at one side of the furnace, and two sets of fixed electrodes 3<SP>1</SP> at the opposite side thereof, the structure 10, Fig. 2, being mounted on rails 17 and supporting a transformer 12, a switch 13 and, for each electrade, holding means 14 permitting the electrode arm 5 to be rotated, and an ammeter 15. Several modifications are described, including one in which the electrodes project through the roof of the furnace and are rockable about their upper ends.
