Abstract
540,103. Electric furnaces. PILKINGTON, BROS., Ltd. (Soc. Anon des Manufactures des Glaces et Produits Chimiques de St.-Gobain, Chauny & Cirey.). April 2, 1940, No. 5913. [Class 39 (iii)] In a tank furnace for glass, heated by electrodes 3, 4 below the glass surface, extending across the tank at an angle to the direction of flow of the glass along the length of the tank, the inclination of the electrodes is such that the length 5 of the current path at the centre is different from the length 6 near the walls. The heating effect near the walls is thereby increased, whereby the cooling effect of the walls is counteracted, and a more uniform temperature obtained. In an alternative, the length 5 may be less than the length 6 so that the glass temperature near the walls may be kept lower. In Fig. 3, two charging ends 7 lead to a single channel 8, and the electrodes 9, 10, 11 are connected to a 3-phase supply. The current paths 12 are approximately equal, so that the glass temperature at the junction is kept uniform. The two parts of each electrode may touch at the centre, or may be slightly separated.
