Abstract
597,844. Glass-melting furnaces. SOC. ANON. DES MANUFACTURES DES GLACES ET PRODUITS CHIMIQUES DE ST.-GOBAIN, CHAUNY, & CIREY. Sept. 3, 1945, No. 22579. Convention date, July 27, 1944. [Class 51 (ii)] [Also in Group XXIII] In the manufacture of glass the batch is charged into a gas heated furnace 1 at the end 2 at which the gases are at a relatively low temperature and moves forward in a direction contrary to that of the gases which flow from burners 11 at the fining end to the charging end. Fining is effected by additional heat generated in the glass by immersed electric resistors or by the passage of current between immersed electrodes 5. Specification 597,833 is referred to in this connection. Electric heating may also be used to supplement the gas heating in the melting zone.
