Abstract
611,401. Glass manufacture. SOC. ANON. DES MANUFACTURES DES GLACES ET PRODUITS CHIMIQUES DE ST.-GOBAIN, CHAUNY, & CIREY. Sept. 3, 1946, No. 26501. Convention date, March 29, 1945. Addition to 597,838. [Class 56] [Also in Group XI] Gas is introduced into molten unfined glass, supplied to a fining chamber as in the parent Specification, whereby its density is reduced so that it flows into the upper electrically heated fining zone instead of sinking prematurely into the lower body of fined glass. As shown, the gas is introduced through the porous graphite walls of a vertically adjustable hollow electrode 9 in the melting tank 1 which co-operates with the nearer of the electrodes 7, 8 in the fining chamber 2 to supply heating current across the channel 4-5 as described in Specification 597,842. The member 9 may be disposed horizontally in a depression in the bottom of the channel 4-5, or may serve as the electrode 8, in which case the gas is allowed to issue from its upper part only. The gas may be inert, reducing or oxidizing and may be preheated ; steam, generator gas or furnace fumes may be used.
