Abstract
647,763. Electric glass furnaces. SOC. ANON. DES MANUFACTURES DES GLACES ET PRODUITS CHIMIQUES DE ST-GOBAIN, CHAUNY, & CIREY. Aug. 1, 1946, No. 23015. Convention date, March 5, 1945. [Class 39(iii)] [Also in Group XXIII] In a furnace wherein molten glass is cellulated by heating, by passage of current therethrough, in the neighbourhood of an immersed surface (see Group XXIII), the electrodes, which may also serve as the immersed surface, are small so as to give a sufficient current density at their surface to ensure the required local heating. Current may be passed between two smalldiameter electrodes 8 and 9 or a 3-phase A.C. supply may be fed, as shown, to two normal electrodes 8, 9 and to two parallelconnected small electrodes such as 11 surrounding withdrawal tubes 13 in compartments 19, arranged on either side of the main tank and connected thereto by submerged orifices. The raw materials are fed in at 14 and 15.
