Abstract

693,072. Making glass. SOC. ANON. DES MANUFACTURES DES GLACES ET PRODUITS CHIMIQUES DE ST. - GOBAIN, CHAUNY, & CIREY. May 16, 1951 [May 16, 1950; May 16, 1950],No. 11489/51. Class 56. [Also in Groups XI and XII] In a glass making furnace of the tank type having vertically disposed stirrers extending through the sole, which stirrers may also be used as electrodes (see Groups XI and XII), the said combined stirrer-electrodes 44, Fig. 5, may be disposed in a refining compartment 41 fed with molten glass from a melting zone 37 over weirs 38 and 39 at the extremities of a barrier 40. The stirrer-electrodes are provided with rectangular heads immersed in the glass approximately at the level of the weirs. A passage 42 leads to a working chamber 43. In a modification, Fig. 6, a small refining cell 45 having entry and exit passages 46 and 47 respectively is provided with three vertical electrodes 48, 49 and 50 connected to the three phases of a three phase A.C. supply, the first two having circular heads 48a and 49a, respectively and the latter a rectangular head 50a. The electrode 50 above may be rotated and its height may be adjusted to vary the heating effect.
