[Class 56] [Also in Group XII] In the manufacture of glass by the continuous process wherein the glass is melted, fired and conditioned to working temperature, a heating means, external to the glass and appropriate to the working temperature, is operative throughout the various operations and the extra heat required for the final melting and fining is obtained by the simultaneous passage of electric current in the body of the glass. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the constantly acting heating means comprise gas, whilst the extra heat in the final melting and fining compartment 3 is obtained from the passage of current between immersed electrodes 7. In this form, the pre-melting takes place in a compartment 2 and the conditioning in a compartment 4. In another form, Fig. 5, the pre-melting takes place on an inclined slab 15 extending across the gas-heated space surrounding the final melting, fining and conditioning compartments. In a third form, several pots are housed in a common gas-heated furnace, each pot being divided into two compartments, one for melting and fining and the other for conditioning. A water-cooled carbon electrode 7 as shown in Fig. 5 may be used for the final melting and fining. Specifications 597,678 and 597,838 are referred to.
